Soon-to-be free agent quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has reportedly agreed to terms with the Atlanta Falcons, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported during the NFL legal tampering period on Monday (March 9).

"Now official: Tua is signing with the #Falcons," Rapoport wrote on his X account.

Rapoport had previously reported that the Falcons were "expected to make a strong push" for Tagovailoa, 28, on Monday.

"The #Falcons are expected to make a strong push for former #Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa, per The Insiders, in a deal than could come together today. There has been mutual interest and with Atlanta potentially needing a veteran with starting experience, Tua is likely it," Rapoport wrote on his X account.

Tagovailoa was informed by the Dolphins of their decision to release him on Monday, general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan said in a statement shared by the team. The veteran quarterback can officially sign with with the Falcons at the start of the 2026 NFL league year on Wednesday (March 11) at 4:00 p.m. ET, at which point all 2025 contracts will expire.

Tagovailoa previously said he'd be open to a "fresh start" with another team after being benched for the final three games of the 2025 NFL season.

"That would be dope," Tagovailoa told reporters during the Dolphins' exit interviews on January 5 via the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson.

The Falcons are invested in former first-round pick Michael Penix Jr., who underwent ACL reconstruction surgery in November and missed the remainder of the 2025 season. Tagovailoa signed a four-year, $212.1 million extension in July 2024, which is the largest contract in Dolphins history and was the third-highest deal among NFL quarterbacks at the time, after throwing for an NFL-best 4,624 yards and a career-high 29 touchdowns in 2023.

The former Alabama standout missed a career-high six games due to hip and head injuries in 2024 and threw a career-worst 15 interceptions while going 6-8 as a starter in 2025 before being benched for backup Quinn Ewers.
