Nine people were wounded during a mass shooting in Bloomington, Indiana, near the Indiana University campus after the famed "Little 500" just after midnight, WTHR reports.

Shots were fired as a crowd celebrated the famed college cycling race on the popular strip of Kirkwood Avenue at 12:25 p.m. The incident stemmed from a fight between two women that escalated when two men pulled out their guns and fired into the crowd, Bloomington Police Chief Mike Diekoff told reporters.

Five young women sustained injuries in connection with gunfire and bullet fragments, while four other individuals were reported to have been hurt during an ensuing stampede. The two women in the initial fight didn't sustain injuries and the motives of the male shooters wasn't clear as of Sunday, according to authorities.

Responding officers found "multiple wounded individuals" when they arrived at the scene, with all nine taken to hospitals including six via ambulance as of 3:00 a.m. local time, WTHR reports. The five women were reported to be a 17-year-old who sustained injuries to her foot and ankle; an 18-year-old who was struck in the ankle and shin; a 21-year-old hit in the shin and thighs; a 22-year-old hit in the back of her thigh; and a 20-year-old who suffered a direct gunshot that traveled through her body from her abdomen to her armpit, though it remains unclear which direction the bullet entered and exited her body, according to Diekoff.

One victim was reported to still be hospitalized in stable condition and set to be released on Sunday.
