The world's top men's tennis player, Jannik Sinner, has announced that he will miss the upcoming US Open due to a persistent right knee injury. Sinner shared the news on social media today, explaining that his knee is not in the condition needed for tournament play. The 25-year-old Italian has been absent from the court since successfully defending his Wimbledon title last month.
Sinner had previously withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open, citing the same knee issue. According to a statement on the ATP Tour website, Sinner expressed disappointment over missing the event but emphasized the importance of prioritizing his health. He stated, "After consulting with my doctors and my team, I have to accept that I'm not ready to compete yet."
The US Open, set to begin on August 30, will proceed without Sinner, who had been on a remarkable winning streak, including five consecutive ATP Masters 1000 titles earlier this year. Sinner's absence follows the news that his rival, Carlos Alcaraz, will return to defend his title in New York after a four-month hiatus due to a wrist injury.
Sinner's withdrawal is a significant blow to the tournament, as he was expected to be a strong contender. However, fans can look forward to seeing other top players, including Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic, who are set to compete in the Cincinnati Open, a key warm-up event for the US Open.
