GLP-1 medications, known for treating diabetes and obesity, may also help combat addiction, according to a new study by Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. These drugs, including Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound, are linked to reduced substance use disorders and serious outcomes across various addictive substances.
The study, published in *The BMJ*, analyzed health records of over 600,000 U.S. veterans with type 2 diabetes. It found that GLP-1 medications reduced the risk of developing substance use disorders by 14% and decreased the risk of severe harm, such as overdose and death, in those with existing disorders. This suggests that GLP-1 drugs target a common biological pathway underlying addiction, potentially blunting cravings.
Ziyad Al-Aly, MD, senior author of the study, explained, "The revelation about GLP-1 medication is that it really works against all major substances... because it is likely acting against the craving itself." The findings support the potential for clinical trials to test GLP-1 medications as standalone treatments for addiction.
The popularity of GLP-1 medications has surged, with their use extending beyond diabetes and obesity to potentially address addiction. As more Americans use these drugs, researchers continue to explore their broader applications.
