The U.S. Coast Guard has detained the MSC Poesia at Port Miami for an expanded inspection, delaying its scheduled departure for an 11-night Caribbean cruise. The ship was detained on Sunday (November 1) with passengers on board, as the Coast Guard verifies its compliance with international standards and U.S. regulations, according to TravelPulse.
MSC Cruises has confirmed the delay and stated that they are fully cooperating with authorities during the inspection. The cruise line is keeping guests informed about the ship's anticipated departure but has not provided additional details on when it will set sail, as reported by Cruise Fever.
The Coast Guard has not disclosed the specific reasons for the detention, but emphasized that the safety of passengers, crew, and the environment is their priority. The MSC Poesia, which can accommodate over 3,200 passengers and more than 1,000 crew members, remains docked at MSC Cruises' Terminal AA in Miami.
Detentions like this are rare, with the Coast Guard's port state control report for 2025 recording only 78 detentions out of 8,999 safety examinations, according to Nacionale. The ship cannot leave port until the inspection is completed and any issues are resolved.
Passengers are advised to keep receipts for any additional expenses incurred due to the delay, as MSC Cruises may offer reimbursements later. The cruise line continues to update guests directly through email and messages.
