DuckDuckGo is seizing an opportunity to expand its presence in schools following Google's recent policy change regarding AI features. On Tuesday, Google announced that schools could disable its Gemini AI tools, but doing so would also disable Google Search, which has AI features integrated into it. This decision has sparked criticism from educators and privacy advocates who argue that schools should have more control over the technology students use, as reported by TechCrunch.

Gabriel Weinberg, DuckDuckGo's founder and CEO, highlighted the company's privacy-focused search engine as an alternative for schools. He shared guidance on how educational institutions can switch their default search engine to DuckDuckGo, inviting schools to contact the company for assistance. Firstpost reported that DuckDuckGo's chief public affairs officer, Kamyl Bazbaz, criticized Google's approach, describing it as an example of monopolistic behavior.

Google's decision to integrate AI features into its search engine has raised concerns among educators who prefer to keep AI out of the learning environment. According to TechCrunch, Google's vice president for education, Chris Phillips, stated that "Search and AI are deeply integrated," meaning that if schools choose to restrict AI, they will lose access to Google Search.

DuckDuckGo, while not entirely AI-free, offers options to disable AI features in its search and browser settings. The company also provides a dedicated website, noai.duckduckgo.com, where AI-generated content is turned off. This flexibility has reportedly led to a 30% increase in DuckDuckGo app installations, as users seek alternatives to Google's AI-driven search experience.

The debate over AI in education reflects broader concerns about the role of AI in daily life. While AI use in workplaces and schools is becoming more common, public opposition to AI data centers and the integration of AI in educational tools continues to grow.
