Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has officially announced his candidacy for Speaker of the House. Following the Democrats' landslide victory in Tuesday's midterm elections, Jeffries is poised to succeed Republican Mike Johnson in January. In a letter to colleagues on Wednesday, Jeffries stated, "We must now deliver the dramatic change the American people are demanding in the majority," as reported by Politico.

Jeffries, who has served two terms as minority leader, is expected to become the first Black Speaker of the House if elected. He has built a reputation as a measured leader with strong support from the Congressional Black Caucus and the New Democrat Coalition. Despite some progressive and red-district Democrats not committing to support him, no serious opposition has emerged, and his large majority is likely to secure his position.

In his letter, Jeffries emphasized his commitment to cost-lowering policies and an aggressive oversight agenda, including probes into President Donald Trump and his administration. He also highlighted his efforts to counter Republican policies, such as gerrymandering and Medicaid cuts.

According to Axios, Jeffries humbly requested support from his colleagues, stating, "I write to humbly request your support in connection with my candidacy to serve as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives." House Democrats are set to hold leadership elections on November 18.
