The Cleveland Browns have announced that Shedeur Sanders will start as quarterback against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday (November 8). Head coach Todd Monken confirmed Sanders' starting role while Deshaun Watson remains in the NFL's concussion protocol. Watson self-reported concussion symptoms after a helmet-to-helmet hit during the Browns' loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to Browns Wire.

Sanders, a second-year quarterback, has been taking first-team practice reps since Wednesday as the team prepares for the Saints. He appeared in seven starts during his rookie season and has played in two games this year, including brief action against Carolina and Pittsburgh. Sanders completed two passes for two yards against the Steelers while Watson was temporarily sidelined.

Despite his limited experience, Sanders has shown potential by developing chemistry with Browns playmakers like tight end Harold Fannin and wide receiver Isaiah Bond. However, his rookie season stats were mixed, with a 56.6% completion rate, 1,400 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, as reported by the Beacon Journal.

The Browns, currently 5-3, are in the thick of the AFC North race. They hope Sanders can effectively manage the offense against the Saints, who are looking to improve their standing in the NFC South. Cleveland has leaned on running back Quinshon Judkins and a strong defense to support their quarterback.

Watson's status for future games remains uncertain and will depend on his progression through the concussion protocol. The Browns will face the Saints at 1 p.m. ET at Caesars Superdome, giving Sanders a chance to prove his capability as a starting quarterback.
