Under Alaska's unique voting system, the top four candidates from the primary, regardless of party affiliation, advance to the general election. According to The Hill, Peltola led the primary with 48% of the vote, while Dan S. Sullivan garnered 43%. Dan J. Sullivan, a retired teacher, is currently running third, which could secure him a spot on the November ballot.

The presence of two candidates with the same name has raised concerns about voter confusion. President Donald Trump has accused Democrats of "trickery" in the race, suggesting that Dan J. Sullivan's candidacy is a ploy to siphon votes from the incumbent. However, both Dan J. Sullivan and the Alaska Democratic Party have denied any affiliation or conspiracy. ABC News reports that the Department of Justice is investigating the situation to determine if there is any merit to these claims.

The race is further complicated by significant financial investments from national political groups. The Senate Leadership Fund, affiliated with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, has committed $17 million to support Dan S. Sullivan. Meanwhile, MS NOW notes that Peltola has outraised Sullivan, amassing $18 million to his $11.7 million.

The election will be decided by ranked-choice voting, a system that has drawn criticism from Trump and others who argue it complicates the voting process. With Alaska being a historically Republican stronghold, the outcome of this race could play a pivotal role in determining control of the Senate.
